Girls inspired to be in the lead!
The inaugural JA Girls in Leadership camp took place at DSW Bonita Training Centre in Lubowa on the 17th and 18th of September. This is another JA program specific for girls who have held positions of responsibility with the Junior Achievement Company Program.
The two day camp’s aim was to inspire, empower and activate the JA girl leaders’ dreams to become the next generation of female leaders by preparing them for future positions of professional leadership. Statistics show that in Uganda on average women hold less than 5% of the top jobs in corporations. The Uganda Development Health Survey (2006) indicates that female managers, senior officials and administrators constitute 28.2% compared to 71.5% male managers. A lot needs to be done to enhance the capacity of young women to dream and also take up top management positions and also serve significantly on organization boards.
15 JA schools with two participants each were represented. As early as 8:00am, DSW was full of activity with girls enthusiastic and eager to be part of the initiative. All participants were young girls in their prime; a critical period in their development as many at this age get distracted and sometimes derailed by societal pressure, rigid gender role expectations and wavering self esteem.
Mrs. Allen Kagina the Commissioner General of the Uganda Revenue Authority was the Chief Guest at the camp. She counseled the aspiring girl leaders that a key aspect to get to the top one must value and respect people. Noted that reputation of a leader can be very temporal but character is enduring. She urged the young aspiring leaders to always strive to build a professional and valuable character.
Look out for these girls in the lead!
